This is a 100% true story... actually, multiple true stories. Urban Outfitters and others sell these shirts for their cool graphics [and they are cool graphics] and I see them on young people and think, "Oh, wow, the young folks are appreciating Cool Thing X that I thought they had forgotten!" but, no, it just turns out they thought it was a cool shirt. The Sublime case is particularly rough to me because I think of them as such a singular, genuine expression. Something melancholy and real about their music that is the exact polar opposite of manufactured pop of any time period. Beautiful, in a rough-edged way. And of course, the tragedy that surrounds them only adds to that. Still, maybe one or two kids see the shirt and give the band a Google and see something beautiful from the ancient '90s. One can hope.
